UNC athletes from tennis, women's lacrosse and softball honored as seasons close

As spring sports come to a close, UNC athletes were recently recognized for their accomplishments on the court and field this season. 

TENNIS 

Two underclassmen, one from each of the men's and women's team, were honored for their play this season after both tennis teams both fell in the Sweet Sixteen in Winston-Salem last week. 

Men’s tennis first-year Benjamin Sigouin was named Rookie of the Year for the Carolina Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Like he did winning ACC Freshman of the Year, Sigouin followed in the footsteps of sophomore William Blumberg last season, bringing home the award for the program in back-to-back years. He was 16-4 on the season and will join Blumberg in the NCAA Singles Championship draw later this month.

Sophomore women’s tennis player Makenna Jones was selected to the ITA Carolina Region Player to Watch this season after a stellar second season for the Tar Heels. Jones, who earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NCAA Singles Championship, was 12-0 as the top singles player for UNC after a 34-4 overall record on the year. She finished the season on a 17 singles match win streak and became the second player in program history to go 14-0 in conference play this year. 

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Four North Carolina women’s lacrosse players received All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse on Friday.

After a stellar career in Chapel Hill, Marie McCool was named First Team All-America for the third season in a row. She has 181 career goals and 59 assists, including 59 goals and 19 assists this season. After leading the team to the Final Four this year, she will end her career, championship or not, one of the most decorated players in the program’s history.  

After breaking the UNC single-season point record, sophomore attacker Katie Hoeg was named second team. Hoeg skyrocketed on the scene after accounting for just 16 points her first season. This season, she scored 39 goals and dished off 48 assists.  

Senior attacker Ela Hazar (34 goals and 46 assists) and first-year attacker Jamie Ortega(team-high 66 goals and 15 assists) were also named Third Team All-America for their play this season.  Sophomore defender Erin Kelly and redshirt first-year goalie Taylor Moreno were also on the honorable mention list.
 

The Tar Heels will take on James Madison on Friday at 5 p.m in Stony Brook, N.Y.

SOFTBALL

North Carolina softball players Kiani Ramsey and Taylor Wike were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I Southeast Region teams after a 30-26 season that ended in the ACC tournament. 

Ramsey, a junior transfer outfielder from Texas Tech, was named second team. After starting all but four games, Ramsey hit for a team-high .374 average and had a .433 on base percentage. From the dish, she had 58 hits and struck out just 15 times, recording six multi-hit games and two multi-RBI games. 

Wike, a senior middle infielder, was named third team. After starting every game of her final season, she hit .354 from the plate and had a .591 slugging percentage, knocking in 34 RBIs on 58 hits.
